parts of some whole

When I’m making a painting I’m thinking about what to reveal.
I’m drawn to images.
Often they are hidden.
If I show something will the viewer know
what it is?
Usually it’s a part of me.
The paintings are not equations.
Usually they are intuitive.
Combinations.
1+1+1 needs to equal 5. Or maybe 1.
Painting is so often just about painting. Color and form, texture and line, shape and space. Solving the problems
I made for myself.
My paintings are becoming less painted
Photographs create structure
Fissures in paper create movement
Paint can be palpable while also facilitating illusion.
When I say paint sometimes I’m not talking about paint.
My paint can be paint but it can be paper.
Or ink from the printer making images. Or a shape that is cut or adhered
In previous bodies the image completely dissolved. If you look close you could see fragments
of photographic language but mostly it was color, shape, and texture.
Pictures of people and things are also color. Shape. Texture.
There’s a picture of my mother and her sister walking in the lava beds. The picture exists on three planes
and you can only see one at a time.
You might be able to connect all three if you move your body and pay attention.
Muybridge documented the Modoc War. Stereoscopic.
Images repeat within the frame and across the room. Paintings wrap around corners. There’s a need to
step back to get the whole picture.
Elongating the frame, pictures form sequences, motion and time.
Sometimes in my brother’s films he’s shooting from a moving car.
Captured and then disappeared again.
